Overview
India is a land of contrasts, featuring the Himalayan ranges – home to the world’s highest peaks- to India’s north whilst enticing sun-worshipers to India’s glorious coastal beaches. With respect to India’s breadth of traditions too, in its history, its monuments to the past, its people, India’s rich culture and colourful festivals - India almost defies description.
Weather
There are regional variations in India's climate but, typically, India's weather is hot for most of the year. December to February are India's coolest months whilst March to June usher in India's really hot temperatures.
In the hot weather, India can be a dusty place to be. Most of India's monsoon rains occur in India's summer, between June and October.
Main resorts & attractions
Delhi is India's modern-day capital, comprised of both ancient and modern. Old Delhi was a capital for Muslim India and moments to India's Muslim history are to be found here. New Delhi is the Indian capital created by the British under the Raj. Within Delhi's boundaries visit India's famous Red Fort, Jama Madjid and Qutab Minar.
Agra is where India's world-famous Taj Mahal is situated. But Agra also hosts other sites - Agra Fort is within this Indian town; Fatehpur Sikhri, capital of India's Mughal Empire is 40km away; and Akbar's Tomb is 10km outside of Agra in Sikandra.
If you're looking for golden beaches in India, then head for Goa. The Portuguese influence in this part of India is still evident, after nearly 500 years of colonialism. Aside from its beaches, Goa also offers wildlife sanctuaries, temples & mosques as attractions to visitors to this part of India.
Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan is a famous Indian tourist attraction, featuring the huge and compelling Amber Fort, built with a stunning combination of white marble and red sandstone. Within Jaipur, don't miss the City Palace, Hawa Mahal - the Palace of Winds - and Jantar Mantar, India - and the world's - largest stone observatory. Also within Rajasthan is the Lake Palace at Udaipur and some of India's most remarkable temples, palaces and forts at Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur. Every November Rajasthan plays host to India's world-famous Pushka Fair, a week-long, colourful Indian cultural and camel festival extravaganza.
Calcutta is India's largest city, and the former capital of the Raj in India. It is home to population of ten million Indians. At Calcutta's centre is a series of green lawns called the Maidan and nearby are to be found numerous of Calcutta's other attractions - the Victoria Memorial, the Ocherlony Monument, the Eden Gardens, the Birla Planetarium & Zoological Gardens.
On India's west coast is Mumbai, India's richest city and one of its busiest ports. One of Mumbai's most famous beaches is Chowpatty Beach. Mumbai is also home to India's ‘Bollywood' movie industry.
Varansi, the most holy city in Hinduism, is situated alongside India's holy Ganges river.
On India's south-western tip lies one of Asia's most sought-after holiday resorts - Kerala. Kerala, with its beautiful Indian beaches is often referred to as ‘God's Own Country'.
