Lanzarote

Overview

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the Canary Islands and is located just 79 miles off the African coast. Lanzarote is 60 km long and 20 km wide yet although bijou, Lanzarote offers a wealth of activities and sights of interest to the visitor.

As with the other islands in the Canary Islands chain, Lanzarote is volcanic in nature although there have been no eruptions on Lanzarote since the 19th century.

Weather

Lanzarote has mild winters, where the temperature on average is 17°C, and summers which are not too hot - on average, temperatures in August and September in Lanzarote are 24°C. Lanzarote also experiences little rain.

The reason for the constant nature of Lanzarote's climate is the Trade Wind coming from the North-East, and the cooling effect on Lanzarote of the Canary Current.

Main resorts & attractions

On the coast, Lanzarote caters for lovers of diving, windsurfing, fishing and sailing as well as boasting several white-sand beaches such as Papagayo and Playa Blanca. Inland, golf is on offer in Lanzarote's interior.

A remnant from Lanzarote's volcanic past is the volcanic Atlantida Tunnel, more than 7 km long. It features two of Lanzarote's main attractions, La Cueva de los Verdes - a system of caves formed by lava flows below ground - and the Jameos del Agua, a complex of caves that includes a natural concert hall.

For holiday makers who don't want to leave dry land there's Lanzarote's Aquarium, the biggest in the Canaries. And for those who don't mind a climb, there's Lanzarote's Mirador del Rio, which has great views over some of the other Canary Islands as well as of La Graciosa, in itself a great destination for a day-trip from Lanzarote.

Lanzarote also has its own National Park, the Timanfaya National Park containing more than 50 square kilometres of volcanic landscape. In northern Lanzarote is the Guinate Tropical Park and Penguin Paradise, guaranteed to delight all who visit. For an unusual trip out whilst in Lanzarote, why not visit the Cactus Garden, created by local Lanzarote artist Cesar Manrique, featuring a collection of cacti and sculptures.
