Slovenia

Overview

Slovenia is a Central European country bordered by Austria, Hungary, Italy and Croatia. As a holiday destination, Slovenia is best known for its coastal strip along the Adriatic together with a rich diversity of lakes, waterfalls, mountains, caves, forests and rivers inland. Local folklore has it that every Slovene must climb Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain, at least once during their lifetime.

Weather

Slovenia's Adriatic coastline has a Mediterranean climate with warm and sunny summers and mild winters. However, take your brolly as the fine weather is often punctuated with thunderstorms.

Away from Slovenia's coast, up in Slovenia's mountains, the winter rainfall is heavy with a cold wind - the ‘bora'. This brings chilly air into Slovenia from central and eastern Europe.

Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, has a climate which is influenced by its location in a large basin, close by to the sub-Alpine and Karst regions. Summers are influenced by the Med's breezes whilst in Winter, chilling fog very often makes an appearance.

Main resorts & attractions

  • Visit Slovenia's coastal resorts at Piran, Isola, Koper and Portoroz.
  • Ljubljana is the meeting point of east and west cultures and it is here in Slovenia's 500 hundred year old capital that you can see the full extent of Slovenia's history, from the Roman town of Emona to the old Medieval castle. Ljubljana is also home to Slovenia's many theatres, museums and art galleries.
  • Slovenia lays claim to more than 1000 karst caves and potholes, among which is the Postojna Cave. This is Slovenia's most famous and most visited cave, with more than 26 million visitors to date making it Europe's, and therefore Slovenia's most visited cave.
  • By contrast, the Pohorje and Maribor region in Slovenia is a splash of green, with over 1000 square kms of verdant forest. Ski centres have recently grown up in Maribor and Hoče, Konjice and Zreče, and Slovenj Gradec Pohorje.
  • In the Julian Alps you can find Slovenia's 4 most-developed tourist towns - Bled, Kranjska Gora, Bohinj and Bovec.
